Soil Erosion Control Methods

By definition it is the practice of controlling the water or wind erosion in agriculture and land. Soil erosion is basically the removal of upper layer of soil or removal of soil from its surface by wind, deforestation and water etc. Cutting of trees and fast running water can easily increase the chances of soil erosion. As the practice of soil erosion increases and the threat of global warming touches sky, people now begin it becomes important to use some effective methods that prevent it or control it. The methods or techniques which are used to prevent the soil loss and water pollution are known as soil erosion control methods. Typically these methods are used in urban and natural areas and in agricultural settings. Mulch, retaining walls, geo textiles and vegetation are some common methods used for the purpose.

Mulches allow top soil to slowly soak the water that maintains the pH value and also protects against rain impacts. However retaining walls are the most effective method of preventing soil erosion. These walls can be built around the area where water runoff cause soil erosion. Geo textiles are another effective method when used with vegetation as it allows soil to stabilize. And one can easily control soil erosion with natural method of planting vegetations as it hold the soil tight at a place and stabilizes the soil which in turn prevents erosion.

Apart from these methods, here we discuss some ways to control soil erosion, have a look on them:

• Plant more and more trees around the area where erosion usually occurs as these provide shelter to your soil and also prevent excess water.
• You can also build a good piece of wind barrier that stops the wind from blowing soil away.
• Another method is creating organic mulch that minimizes the temperature of soil and also prevents erosion.
• Water your soil or keep it moist but don’t do over watering as it will wash away soil and leads it to degrade its quality. For this purpose you can use damp piles of mulch that would be easy to fix.
• Keep your vegetation enough strong, growing and healthy as it will holds the soil at a place and protects its surface.
• Find the methods according to the location, climatic conditions, soil texture and size of the land or farm.
• Plant shrubs and grass as much as possible as long grasses will prevent the water retention of the soil. Typically it is useful for your physical structures.
